Exclusive Interview: Vanessa Hudgens Talks Sucker Punch

Not reaching theatres until 2011 is director Zack Snyder's follow-up to Watchmen, Sucker Punch, but actress Vanessa Hudgens -- who will also be seen this summer in Beastly, the modern-day version of Beauty and the Beast -- took a few minutes to discuss the film.
Wikipedia describes the plot of SUCKER PUNCH as follows: "Snyder has described the film as 'Alice in Wonderland with machine guns, including dragons, B-52 bombers and brothels.' Snyder's wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder concludes, 'In the end, it's about this girl's survival and what she needs to do to be able to cope.' In February 2009, Snyder released a short synopsis of Sucker Punch which states: 'Set in the 1950s, it tells the story of Baby Doll, who is trying to hide from the pain caused by her evil stepfather and lobotomy. She ends up in mental institution and while there she starts to imagine an alternative reality. She plans to escape from that imaginary world but to do that she needs to steal five objects before she is caught by a vile man. She has 5 days to escape before being lobotomized. In order to cope with the situation, she enters the hyper-real world of her imagination, and the lines between reality and dream begin to blur. She is joined with friends who are inmates from the institution. Lessons learned in the said fantasy world could help the girls escape their real-world fate."

Actress Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Blondie in SUCKER PUNCH, is, of course, one of the stars of the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL trilogy, which was an undeniable global phenomenon. But it should be pointed out that her success in that Disney-branded franchise has NOT made it easier for her to get roles that stray away from that formula.

"In a way, it feels like you're starting all over again," she explians. "HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL was an incredible journey, so much fun, life-changing and it made me grow and discover who I am as a person, but you finish it and you're basically starting from scratch all over again. You can go an do the same thing, but that's not what I want to do. I want to continue to grow and do different things that people would not expect. So it's back to basics every time. I could do another musical, I could play another sweet girl in a movie, but that's not really what I want to do. And because that's what I'm known for, it's kind of harder for them to look at me in a different light. I've been fighting for parts; I had to fight for SUCKER PUNCH, which I'm excited about because I feel like it's the first part that people are going to see me as someone like this, running around with a 30 cal gun.

"SUCKER PUNCH is literally six movies put together as one," Hudgens continues. "It's five strong, sexy women kicking ass and it's very empowering. Every day we do martial arts, train with Navy SEALS and shoot guns. It's very exciting."

As to working with Zack Snyder, she offers: "He's amazing. He's so much fun, such a visionary and a general all-around good guy. He would actually come and do our workouts with us. And he's really FIT. And working against green screen is really interesting. You just have to take a leap of faith. In part of the movie I'm in a B-25 bomber plane and I'm shooting a 50 cal and a 30 cal out of the back; I'm firing at a dragon, I'm screaming at it and I'm shooting and it takes a bite off the plane. It's pretty intense, but you just have to trust Zack. If he says he needs more, you give him more. If he needs less, you give him less."
