Superman: Deja Vu All Over Again

There's something very strange about Superman on film. On the one hand so many people complain about Superman Returns and claim the character can't be relevant today, yet every time there is a rumor about the character returning to film, the Internet is set ablaze -- and it happened again today.
A couple of years ago when George Miller was developing Justice League: Mortal there was a constant back-and-forth about who was going to play the Man of Steel, the strongest candidate supposedly being Tom Welling. The whole thing ended up being nonsense, and now we're seeing history repeat itself.

On February 9th, Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily broke the story that Christopher Nolan was going to be serving as "godfather" to a new Superman film, helping to guide and shape the film on its way to the big screen.

Nine days later, on the 18th, MTV conducted an interview with Warner's Diane Nelson (the head of DC Entertainment) who said of the Nolan story, "We don't have any plans about that, and as I've mentioned, in the coming months we'll be making a lot of announcements about what our content plans will be. But right now, that's nothing but rumor — and we frankly don't say a whole lot more about rumor than that, so..."

Today, February 24th, Latino Review broke the story that Legendary Pictures had hired writer David Goyer to write "Man of Steel," based on his pitch that involved Superman going up against Lex Luthor and Brainiac in a story that was modeled after the John Byrne comic era of the mid 1980s.

Later in the day, Variety chimed in with confirmation that the story was true - though one has to wonder whether or not the trade was basing its information on the Latino Review report.

Tonight, Aintitcoolnews' Harry Knowles offered the following: "So just a while ago I just got off the phone with Thomas Tull at Legendary Pictures who told me that the story that appeared over on LATINO REVIEW just frankly isn't true. Tull has not unilaterally hired Goyer to come in and write the new SUPERMAN. He loves Goyer, but frankly - the project isn't at the Script stage yet. Seems Nolan is still hatching some ideas. But he just wanted me to pass on that they have the highest enthusiasm for this project, but the story on Latino just isn't accurate. I'll see what more I can find out, but as of right now, there really isn't anything else to tell."

Except for one bit in Harry's report: "Nolan is still hatching some ideas," which would seem to indicate that Diane Nelson wasn't being entirely honest in saying reports of his involvement were just rumor.

The real question, of course, is how long it will take before the rumors start swirling that Tom Welling will be the star of Man of Steel.

Just looking for some facts among the rumors.

Sometimes it can be so frustrating to a Superman fan.
