Brett Ratner takes on Snow White

The director that CBM fans love to hate is taking on a fairy tale
Brett Ratner has just signed on to direct a re-telling of the Brothers Grimm fairytale, Snow White, reports Deadline. It seems that fairy tales are the hot commodity around Hollywood these days. Well, that and comic book movies.

Ratner had this to say about the upcoming Snow White film:
"This is not your grandfather's Snow White. Melisa went back to the 500 year old folk tale and put in some of the things that were missing from Walt Disney's film. His dwarves were miners, and here they are robbers. There is also a dragon that was in the original folk tale." He goes on to praise Walt Disney's film as one of the great films in history, but his film will be much edgier with some comedic elements to the film. So, does this mean that we will see Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker as Happy and Grumpy?

Melisa Wallack is currently writing the script for the film. She has previously written on films such as "The Dallas Buyer's Club" as well as wrote and directed the 2007 Aaron Eckhart-starrer Bill."

The Snow White idea received a darker treatment back in 1997 with the made-for-TV film "Snow White: A Tale of Terror" starring Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neill. For the most part, people enjoyed this film and it was done rather well if I remember correctly.

The Snow White films joins a growing list of films that are based on a fairy tale. Last week, I reported that Disney has optioned for a script to be written regarding an updated version of "Cinderella," a live action film, I'm sure. Disney is also moving forward with their newest adaptation of L. Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz, titled "The Great and Powerful Oz." Sam Mendes recently dropped out of contention to direct, but it sounds as though they are wooing Guillermo del Toro now that he is off "The Hobbit" films. You can also add Adam Shankman and Timur Bekmambetov to the list of potential directors.
