Ron Howard to Direct "The Dark Tower"

Could this project finally be getting off the ground?
Earlier this year JJ Abrams stated that he will not be involved with the film adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" book series, and apparently Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Akiva Goldsman have picked up the rights to make the film.

The movie would be written by Goldsman (credits include I Robot, and A Beautiful Mind) and directed by Howard (The Da Vinci Code). The hope is that this would start out as a film, and then spawn a TV series afterwards.

The question is, would the film include any other characters from King's other books? "The Dark Tower" series is notorious for crossing over and including them in it's big overall story. This could be pretty cool!
