SMURFS Coming to Theatres


A live-action, animated big screen adapation for THE SMURFS is in the works, coming from Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation.

The Smurfs will head to the big screen via Jordan Kerner ("Charlotte's Web"), who is producing. Writers David Stem and David Weiss are in negotiations to write the screenplay.

Kerner has had the rights for The Smurfs since 2002 and was working on a 3-D CGI feature at Paramount/Nickelodeon.

Created by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford in 1958 The Smurfs had a series which ran which ran from 1981-90 on NBC's Saturday-morning lineup from. Having just celebrated their their 50th anniversary it's a good time for the big screen jump.
