Pioneering Manga Editor Dies

Nobumichi Akutsu has edited manga since 1951, including the works of a young Osamu Tezuka.

Nobumichi Akutsu, an early editor for Osamu Tezuka (ASTRO BOY), died September 12 due to cancer of the larynx, Anime News Network reports. He was 84.

A manga editor since 1951, Akutsu first edited Tezuka in the '51-'53 Bôken-Ô manga Age of Adventure (Bôken-Ô was one of the earliest post-World War II children's manga).

Akutsu edited Tezuka's Son-Goku the Monkey, The Fossil Man Strikes Back, X-Point on the South Pacific, The Devil of the Earth and many more.

Tezuka named one of his comic characters for Akutsu.

Akutsu was buried in a small, private ceremony.
